Our nations symbol of cherished Liberty and Freedom. Slowly but surely our freedoms are being eroded by an intrusive Government with the unknowing consent of us all. May we have the courage to regain the freedoms our Forefathers endowed to us. Below you will find a sampling of some of the letters I've written over many  years, these have been published in our local Letters to the Editor Pages. God Bless America!

Democracy is not the key to the advance of civilization, individual freedom is.

What Happened?  1994

Not long ago, when Freedom and Liberty mattered, we had a nation of strong individuals steeped in virtue and an independent spirit. Many of these people willingly fought to defend our freedoms, not only from foreign, but domestic threats as well. These forefathers' common sense beliefs, dedication to individual rights, and independence from an intrusive government allowed this nation to prosper and remain free.

Our Founders, in there infinite wisdom limited and distributed power, fearing a government that could take away peoples God given rights. As liberalism's elitist control freaks, stealth objective of governmental domination of the individual is slowly coming to fruition, that fear is becoming reality. We have evolved from a nation of law, to a nation of to many laws.

Today a docile and less than stalwart citizenry, believing public opinion polls trump the constitution, is willing to turn its rights over to our nanny government. Our dodgy President and meretricious legislator's offer us fluffed solutions to every problem imaginable, even some that don't exist, then the grand panjandrums of constitutional revisionism defend these assaults on our liberty. Rather than being aware of and standing by our founding principals, we accept the soap opera in Washington as governance itself.

Next time you sing the National Anthem and you come to the part, " O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!" see if it doesn't have a hollow ring to it?

"Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." - James Madison - 1788

A Nation of Enablers!  1999

After the cowardly and evil tragedy in Littleton occurred, we ask what went wrong? Watching the T.V. and reading the newspapers I've seen rationalizations as answers for everything, from movies, to video games, to guns, and computers. Actually these are but excuses for an impaired society.

It seems as though few if any, have the courage to address the real disease, we only want to deal with symptoms. Dealing with only the symptoms, allows us to be the comfortable cowardly enablers that we've all become for perversion and evil.

We look to the Santa Claus of all enablers, our government, to solve a problem of the soul. Yet, what we suffer from is the unintended consequence of governmental social engineering and hubris. This is asking the devil to fix the problem of evil.

When are we, as individuals, going to get a backbone and stand up to the evils that exist and our perverted ways? Or are we going to accept more Pabulum for idiots' solutions? You decide; our children might even learn the difference between courage and cowardice, and admire courage!

Conservative Republicans believe that everyday is the 4th of July,
while liberal Democrats wish everyday was April 15th.

PC elitist vilify freedom lovers  1996

It has become quite obvious that today's Radical Left Wing politicos want nothing more than to control all of our thought, law, schools, media, and people. Well, I for one am sick and tired, of being sick and tired with these thought control freaks and Freedom haters. Anyone opposing these attacks on our freedom is vilified, belittled, and labeled as intolerant.

The last and greatest bastion of freedom in the world is under attack from within and not by accident. We now suffer the unintended consequences of our government's attempts to regulate us to nirvana. The government makes liars, cheaters, and thieves out of honest hard working people with to numerous complex, redundant, and silly simpleton laws. They then pass more laws that protect and enable sloth, criminal and demented behavior and disguise them as civil liberties. We must know that government hubris is not the solution but the problem!

To show how far they've come, in one of the latest polls taken on our greatest presidents, and no mention of Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Jackson, or T.. Roosevelt. It's as though the collective wisdom of the founders and defenders of our freedoms has successfully been expunged from our history by the politically correct elitists. The mere mention of Kennedy and Reagan above these great leaders shows how far the media and leftists have accomplished the dumbing down and control of American thought.

Is it now time to balkanize our country so that those of us, who love freedom and liberty, might migrate to an area free of the libel and intimidation of radical left wing freedom haters and control freaks?

"There is in the nature of government an impatience of control that disposes those invested with power to look with an evil eye upon all external attempts to restrain or direct its operations. This has its origin in the love of power. Representatives of the people are not superior to the people themselves." - Alexander Hamilton - Federalist Papers, 1787.

Zero tolerance equals zero intelligence

In response to your Jan. 14th editorial, "knife carrying teen treated with fairness."

I find the editorial on this student to be quite edifying about what we are becoming as a society. This student's parents, if he is suspended for carrying a pocketknife on his key chain, should sue the school and especially the principal, David Yates. Why?

In Yates' own words, "times have changed." If that's true, he is negligent. I don't believe Council Rock has discontinued wood shop, metal shop or other programs that use weapons such as hammers, utility knives, awls, or chisels. Any of these items could be taken back into the classroom, and a malevolent student could do harm to someone. He must shut these programs down or put all tools on a leash, or maybe a metal detector at the shop door.

Has he discontinued Baseball as a physical education activity? If not, they should at least be using rubber bats, so a socially maladjusted student couldn't harm  a fellow student. Field hockey uses a hard wooden or metal stick to smash a ball; think what it could do to someone's head

Has he thoroughly inspected all school property to free it of rocks, or other objects, that could be put in the hand of a "bully" and used to intimidate others?

And last but not least, we should ban these weapons: 6-inch long sharpened wooden sticks with hard lead points. These could almost be considered as dangerous as nail clippers in the hand of a student showing anti-social behavior.

Zero tolerance equals zero intelligence. We are becoming a nation of morons cowering before a perverted few. Don't make me laugh! This is balderdash!

"The further backward you look, the further ahead you can see." - Winston Churchill

Sorry end to a great beginning!  1997

It seems as though government and the bureaucracies it creates are hell-bent on punishing the responsible and achieving people in society. We as a society are being taken to the lowest common denominator by governmental and bureaucratic hubris. Their only objectives are continual self-justification and continued control over us all.

Some Examples: The Centers for Disease Control has proposed limiting the number of young people who can be in a car and upping the age for driver's license since young people tend to have more accidents which adds to our health care costs, etc. The result is we punish the responsible young people who aren't the problem.

Work hard, get a raise, be frugal and save for retirement. What's the result? The IRS gets a bigger share of your sweat, and you get less Social Security on top of paying more taxes. Hence, reward the slackers and punish the responsible achievers.

A farmer working hard to feed us and make a living at it touches a wetland or disturbs a Kangaroo Rat while plowing his fields and becomes a criminal. Then his equipment is confiscated by government bureaucrats or some other horror story occurs. Boy I wish they could get up the nerve to treat robbers and murderers that poorly, but then farmers are just harmless little fuzz balls.

These are a few examples of our government being out of control. How, I ask you, could the best form of government ever devised, giving us 200 years of freedom, come to this? Wake up America and smell the roses before Uncle Sam or some agency bans the scent as being bad for us.

Know the Constitution  March, 2000

I just walked away from my television in disgust! On the show "Who wants to be a Millionaire," the question was, which branch of the government does the first amendment deal with? The executive, the legislature, the judicial, or the C.I.A.? The contestant was a lawyer and couldn't answer, he called a friend who was a lawyer and she wasn't sure, but luckily they got the answer.

Does this say something about our country and Lawyers who are bound by this document? I would hope that everyone at the Courier Times knows our Constitution, but from some of the editorials I'm not sure. I would hope if someone isn't sure about this document and what it states that they would spend the time and read it. http://www.law.ou.edu/hist/constitution/  Not like the lawyer on the show above.

Remember, FREEDOM ISN'T FREE! Thank a Vet for yours.

Reform the legal system 1995

As it looks more and more like the Clintons will not get their wish of socializing the health care system at this time, even though I'm sure they'll keep trying. I would like to suggest that they next look at government intervention in what I believe is a real crisis, the legal system.

Maybe we could get Hillary to head a task force to look at the spiraling cost of our judicial system. Just take a look at the costs associated with the O. J. Simpson case, the Paula Jones suit and the Dan Rostenkowski indictment. Truly a crisis exists when we must set up a legal defense fund for (a president's) defense. This is an area that is ripe for socialization, cost containment, etc. at which Hillary is so well suited. They could continue to use their theme of class envy - just look at the representation that Bill, Dan and O.J. are getting.

Unfortunately, they are both lawyers and this would hit to close to home.

"The Errors of a Wise Man make your Rule, Rather than the Perfections of a Fool."  William Blake

The sad reality

After watching and reading what Miss Monica had to say, some things become obvious. We have a liar and woman abuser and user as president! Allowing this liar's spin, the other obvious conclusion is that the liberals and media are but more of his colluding whores. How sad!

"Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other." - John Adams

Cut government right now 1993

The Heritage Foundation and others have suggested the elimination of the departments of Education and Agriculture, this being the solution to our bloated federal government. In response - many special interest groups - the National Education Association etc. - have accused them of coming up with simplistic solutions to complex problems

They are right, there are complex problems we have to solve. Unfortunately it's these same departments that create much of the complexity we have to deal with on a regular basis. I might point out also, that our government's solution to all our woes is always more bureaucratic gobbledygook and regulation. Less the funding, I might add.

These two agencies are ripe for elimination and I hope we don't stop with them. Many of "our" bureaucracies in Washington must be shrunk or eliminated if we are to continue as a free and prosperous country. We, as a country, grew and flourished without the government being the big nanny problem solver.

The federal government must be looked at as a last resort and not the first. Let's admit that the great social experiments and big government that have occurred in the last fifty years has failed us all. Not only creating a large dependant class of people, but emasculating the family unit. Let us leave our children a legacy of freedom, not a debt from a federal government that's out of control.

It's the spending stupid!

"I place economy among the first and most important of republic virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared." -Thomas Jefferson to William Plumer, 1816

Gloating Populace

"What goes around, comes around." As the gloating populace cheers the settlements against the Tobacco Industry, Gun Manufacturers, and any other deemed unpopular group, what could be the consequence? Are they asking, what will this distended logic that allowed these settlements accomplish? Could it be that it would come back to haunt us as individuals and usurp our freedoms?

"Once the wild asses are loosed from the barn, it's hard to get them back in." Who or what's next? I would suggest Balloon Manufacturers since lots of children suffocate on them, and look at the damage to fish and other wild life it causes. Surely a safer balloon could be made if it weren't for these peoples greed. Anyone for toy makers next?

"Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves." Abraham Lincoln postulating for all time! Another group I believe we should target are those people with fireplaces in their homes. These elites are polluting the air, creating health hazards, making asthmatics suffer, and burning TREES and certainly inconsiderate of the public. Surely a $100 a year tax, per fireplace, would compensate the general public for the damage inflicted on it. Anyone for those elites who put pesticides on their lawns?

"The only true crystal ball is a rear view mirror." Let them reap what they sow!

"The man who gets angry at the right things and with the right people, and in the right way and at the right time and for the right length of time, is commended. "  Aristotle

Gore leadership!

The morning news reviewed the previous days bombing results in Serbia, stating that a military barracks, communication facilities, and a tobacco factory had been hit. A tobacco factory? Then reality set in on me; targets by committee and policy by polls came to mind.

The logic is clear to me now. Almost everyone loves to hate the tobacco interests and now we have Al Gore showing his leadership ability by picking one of the targets.

Social Engineers running military operations and our foreign policy can be comical at times, if it wasn't for the serious consequence of their ineptness?

Who's crying now? 1997

I've read with interest the many letters and articles on the traffic problems created by the Core Creek Park light show. I would like to express my appreciation of the problem these residents face for two months of the year. But, what of us lifelong area residents who face the same problem 12 months of the year because of the developments that are now so incensed.

As a boy, many of today's heavily traveled roads were dirt and gravel lanes, Flowers Mill Road and South Pine street and more. When I rode my bike from Langhorne to Newtown, I passed 17 farms one my Uncles, 8 individual residences and George School. This might account for 35 cars at less than one trip per day. If I rode my bike onto Maple Avenue without looking it was a one in a million chance of being hit by a car, today it's 50/50. Today when I visit my Mother on Maple Avenue, in her home of over 50 years, I can't get in or out of her driveway. This is caused by all the new arrivals rushing to their newly built homes, or trips to the Malls. When I try to get onto Maple Avenue from the driveway I count the cars as they go by, just like we used to count the cars on a train at the crossing gate. Once, I got right out due to the civility of another Maple Avenue resident, but the car behind Her was blowing it's horn.

I can empathize with your problems! But do what we were told as the area went from small town enchantment and bucolic country, to the harried concrete and macadam jungle of today. Quit crying Crocodile tears, you can't stop PROGRESS!

"Man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes they have to eat them." Adlai Stevenson

Smaller is better

I watched with much interest the debate on smoking, showed on C-SPAN, and the legislation proposed to limit it. I find it quite amusing, watching congress in action as it legislates away choices and individual freedom on the presumption of the public good.

Congress' attempts to micro-mange every aspect of our lives has become a farce, and doesn't seem to be what our forefathers envisioned when they wrote the Constitution we are supposed to be governed by.

It's no wonder our government is held in such low regard by the honest hard working people who pay excessive taxes to support it. Government has become the enabler for any and all groups, with some perceived grievance. When will we realize that the best government we can have is the least government.

Anyone Smell Smoke?

Not to many years ago the adage, where there's smoke there's fire, could hold water. But today, the Clinton apologists with the help of James Carville, Larry Flint, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Chucky Shumer and others want to assure you it's not smoke you see, it's but a little dark cloud on the horizon. Rest easy folks, draft evasion, bimbo eruptions, Whitewater, travelgate, filegate, campaign finance, perjury and all other charges are but figments of the sanctimonious right wings imagination.

Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Kathleen Wiley and Monica Lewinsky have overzealous imaginations. Jim McDougal, David Hale, Webster Hubbell, Jim Guy Tucker and Susan McDougal didn't spend time in jail for crimes, but for being friends of the President. Draft evader, he never got the notice or was it he never saw the notice. John Huang is being persecuted because he looks Chinese. Those Religious Zealots just want let up will they?

Rest assured all you Clinton supporters next time you see or smell smoke, don't roust the children, don't call the fire department it's but a cloud on the horizon caused by us sanctimonious right wingers. Give Bill and Hillary a call, they can explain it all, if you can talk without gagging on the smoke!

"Sometimes our actions speak so loud, nobody can hear us speak."

Big Government Growth

Our government will never voluntarily relinquish power or reduce the size of it's bureaucracies. It's tendency is to expand and grab more power and control over everyone, at the expense of individual liberty. An example is it's attempts to sovietize the best health care system in the world.

It's disgusting to see free-born Americans grovel at the feet of big government and beg. Give me a job, a house, safe streets, free medical care, a pension, take care of my kids, or some pet new law. Whatever happened to individual initiative, self reliance, responsibility, pride, and the family?

To be enslaved by a superior power is no shame. But to voluntarily become a dependent of Big Brother is repugnant to everything our forefathers stood for, and fought to save and defend. History will show that political self interest and prevarication has bought our freedom from us with promises of a bowl of soup and security.

Truly this is a conundrum of all time!

"If a man hasn't discovered something that he would die for, he isn't fit to live." Martin Luther King, Jr

Bill Clinton supporter's Speed Trap defense.

As I watch and read Bill Clinton's defenders logic, it reminds me of those of us who have ever been caught in a speed trap. We act as though the Police Officer has done something wrong; we rationalize our speeding by reasoning everyone else does it. We pine the police are out to get "Me", we blame the speedometer even though we had the cruise control set at 70 MPH per hour in a 55 MPH zone. We ask, why are they wasting all this time and money when they could be out catching murderers and drug dealers, or at least someone else?

Why doesn't this logic fly? The President had a "Star" detector and it was most certainly going off! His arrogance and self-indulgent attitude, shut out the warning buzzer, and instead of slowing down he sped up. Now we are asked to forgive his reckless behavior.

What does this logic and the polling data say about us as Americans? We have become a nation of self-indulgent enablers willing to rationalize any behavior if it fits us at the moment. We label people with moral conviction and virtue as "Religious Zealots" and "Bigots" if they question our lowered standards. And then we wonder why we have illiteracy, drug problems, children killing children, crime, babies in dumpsters, and a myriad of other problems.

This pathetic episode in our history only proves that being moral and virtuous invites ridicule from the enablers we've become.

Arrogant assessment 1995

In response to the affirmative action article by Tom Johnson.

Apparently Professor Bursk is one of the cognitive elite who knows what's best for society. Coming from academia his opinion of those who oppose affirmative action is an arrogant judgment, but not unexpected. We should hope for better from someone who is teaching our young adults.

Unfortunately, anyone who opposes anything from the liberal agenda is labeled a racist, uncaring, greedy, or worse. But what has this agenda given us over the last 30 years - especially the people it was supposed to help.

As for the business perspective, how politically correct they've become. It's amazing seeing business moguls so tough at making a buck, downsizing, etc., cowering at the feet of special interest groups and government bureaucrats. My how the worm has turned.

Let's start judging all people on their abilities and merit.

"He who would do good to another must do it in Minute Particulars. General Good is the plea of the scoundrel, hypocrite, and flatterer. "  William Blake

Mean season 1994

In response to your editorial, Mean season, just a couple of points.

President Clinton accuses Mr. Limbaugh and the Reverend Falwell of fibbery, down-beatism, and cynicism. You failed to point out that's how "he" got elected with 43% of the vote and turned it into a mandate for change. Remember his promises of a middle class tax cut, a new Haitian and China policy and his claims of the 80's as the decade of greed etc.

As for verification, most of what Mr. Limbaugh says, he uses quotes and video of this administration as proof positive. Maybe if they weren't so inept I.E. Joycelyn Elders ET AL. he wouldn't have so much ammunition. Giving the Clintons power and money to enact their agenda is like giving car keys and whiskey to teenage boys.
